The hongkong prize is a merit-based award sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited and hosted by Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation to reward scientists and research teams in Hong Kong or those set up by universities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area for their remarkable scientific achievements. The BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize Charter is designed to promote a scientific and standardized management of the award and ensure its objectivity and fairness during the review process.
No ticket holder won the first prize in last week’s draw, resulting in a rollover of HK$102 million for tonight’s jackpot. The winning numbers will be announced in an hour’s time at the Jockey Club’s Stanley Street betting station in Central, known as Hong Kong’s luckiest betting station with 47 top prize winners since 1994.
This year marks the seventh anniversary of the prestigious biennial Hang Lung Mathematics Awards, founded in 2004 by Hang Lung Properties and HKUST to inspire secondary school students to explore beyond boundaries and fulfill their creative potential in mathematics and science. Over the past 10 editions, HKUST and its partners have gathered ideas from more than 2,600 students from over 200 schools in Hong Kong and presented their innovative research reports at the competition.
A total of HK$1.25 million is awarded to the gold medalists, while HK$200,000 is given to the silver and HK$50,000 is awarded to the bronze medalists. HK$10,000 is also granted to the best teacher and student with outstanding performance in the competition. The winners will be honoured at a ceremony in October.
The first winner of this prestigious international award in astronomy was Professor Yutao Fu of the University of Tokyo for his ground-breaking research on stellar rotational dynamics and stellar populations. The second winner of this prize, Professor Hideaki Matsuura of the Institute for Astronomy and Space Sciences in Japan, was commended for his discovery of the origin of cosmic rays.
The 2023 BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize will see a further boost in the Group 2 and Group 3 prize money to a combined increase of 5.9%. The overall total prize fund of the award will also grow, with Class 1 races being boosted by 3.4% to HK$3m and classes 3 through 5 receiving purse increases of 3.7%. This is the second consecutive year that BOCHK has boosted the overall prize funds for this prestigious award. This is to further support the eminent scientists who are making contributions to our city’s future technological innovation and offering significant support to the SAR’s economic transition.
