Established in 1996, the Hong Kong Prize aims to encourage research postgraduates to develop an interest in different aspects of local history and pursue academic excellence in their studies. It also provides them with an incentive to explore and make use of Hong Kong’s historical documents and records. Sponsored by the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, the prize received enthusiastic support from universities, researchers and innovative enterprises across the city. This year, it received record numbers of applications from researchers in various fields, including artificial intelligence, life and health, new materials and energy, and advanced manufacturing.
The prestigious writing contest has drawn authors from around the world and is one of the most renowned competitions in Asia. It rewards top ten finalists with both monetary awards and shopping vouchers and has an impartial judging system that ensures entries will be judged fairly. It is crucial that participants read the rules and regulations thoroughly before submitting an entry, to avoid any issues later on.
The award is based on the principle of encouraging research with potential to benefit society and is open to researchers worldwide regardless of their home country. It is not just a recognition of scientific achievement; it also promotes the exchange of research results and technology between scientists in Hong Kong and overseas.
Applicants must have published a research paper in their field – clinical studies, observational or epidemiological articles, as well as meta-analyses and review articles can all qualify – that has made a significant contribution to the advancement of science and technology. An expert panel will select the winners, who will be honored at an awards ceremony held in Hong Kong and have access to premier research facilities here.

This is an annual award that shines a spotlight on the many unsung heroes of our community, from journalists who expose human rights abuses to activists who risk their lives for freedom of speech to professors who invent liquid biopsy to allow doctors to detect cancer more quickly. Their dedication and perseverance is a true source of inspiration.
The prize is an initiative of the Brand Hong Kong Foundation and is supported by the Government of Hong Kong. Applicants can apply online starting from March 1 for the chance to win a trip to visit Hong Kong and see its vibrant culture for themselves. The competition will be opened to residents of Southeast Asia, mainland China and the rest of the world in three waves.
